Former Bainbridge High School Bearcats All-Region 1-AAAAA offensive tackle Chris Johnson has been switched to tight end this season with the Savannah State University Tigers.

Johnson was also a n outstanding performer for coach Larry Cosby’s Bearcats track team. During the 2014 season he was Region champion in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 7 inches and advanced to the Sectional Meet at Starrs Mill High School.

Johnson started the season as an interior offensive lineman but has since been switched to tight end. Johnson, son of Roger Johnson of Bainbridge, was an All-Region 1-AAAAA offensive tackle. As a sophomore sociology major at Savannah State, Johnson would like to work with young people and do some high school coaching following his college He was totally focused on meets and games on the track and Savannah State’s Theodore A. Wright Football Field

Johnson played under Bearcats head football coach Jeff Littleton. Bearcats head track coach Larry Cosby said Johnson had as much drive and desire as any track performer he has ever coached.

Last season played well before local fans during the Tigers 24-14 loss to the Florida A&M Rattlers in Tallahassee. On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Tigers and Rattlers will play in Savannah.

Johnson’s father, Roger Johnson, who is a mentor at Bainbridge State College, says he cannot be prouder of his son.

“Chris does a lot of tings to make me proud,” his father said. “He is dedicated and hard working on the athletic field and in the classroom. He spent last summer studying at Bainbridge State College.”

Tigers head football coach Earnest Wilson III, who played for the Texas Tech University Red Raiders, says Johnson’s hard play and competitiveness are always very evident.

This Saturday, Johnson and his Tiger team s. mates will travel to Daytona Beach Florida to take on the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats in a big annual rivalry game.
