Lillie Ola Jones Carter

Sept. 12, 2015

The much beloved 88-year-old daughter of the late Isaiah Jones and Emma Lou Fagg Jones, of Decatur County, Ga. quietly departed this earthly life September 12, 2015 following a lengthy illness and brief hospitalization in upstate New York.

She accepted Çhrist at an early age and joined John the Baptist M.B. Church with her family. Later she joined Nelson Chapel A.M.E. Church to continue her Christian growth journey. She was unable to attend in later years, but always supported when she could. She always had high expectations of herself and everyone else and was quick to say when improvement needed to be made.

Mrs. Carter finished with very high honors at Hutto High in 1942. She achieved very high honors at Savannah Sate College in 1951, earning a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She was a loving teacher for 30 plus years and firmly believed that every child could learn and achieve excellence in some area.  She further insisted that every child learn self-discipline, confidence, self-respect and how to set a proper dinner table.

Miss Jones was married to Mr. Earl Carter on June 8, 1946, and from that union came their only child Earlyne, born in 1949.

She leaves to celebrate her life a devoted daughter, Earlyne Carter Payne (Eric) of Hadley, N.Y.; three beloved grandchildren, Letea Maisha Payne Rush (Jason) of upstate New York, Imani Kimu Payne of Shanghai, China and Ushinde Reuben-Earl Payne (Dana) of Long Island, New York. She also leaves three great-grandchildren, Danique Payne, Justice Payne and Jerusha Two Wolfs Lillie Andrew Rush; two sisters: Marietta Sheffield of Bainbridge and Lillie Ree Gaston of Toledo, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbors and friends too numerous to name, but know that you are loved. Thank you so much for the kindness and grace shown towards her.

Celebration services will be announced at a later date pending the return of her grandson from China.

Mrs. Lillie Ola Jones Carter was a very private person, but would help anyone. She was a light on a hill that could not be hidden.

Bruton Mortuary was in charge of local arrangements.
