Belinda Green, director of the Decatur County Senior Center at 402 West Water Street, outlined the many activities the center has to benefit Decatur County senior citizens during a Wednesday address to the Bainbridge Lions Club.

“Our mission is to coordinate services that promote the well being and independence of older and disabled Georgians that help them achieve healthy and self sufficient lives,” she said in opening her comments.

“We have about 33 clients and they play bingo, exercise, square dance and do other fun activities.

“We serve hot meals to around 68 people every Monday through Friday. We also sponsor a health fair that local businesses support and participate in and attend a senior Olympics event that is usually held in Blakely.”

Green also said Meals on Wheels are also distributed out of the center.

The director told the Lions that the Decatur County Center and other area senior life enrichment centers enrich the lives of Southwest Georgia senior citizens through programs and services that decrease loneliness and provide social opportunities to enhance quality of life.

Following her address, Lions first vice president Sam Mayhew presented Green with a certificate of appreciation and a $250 check for the center on behalf of the club.

Jim Beck, who coordinated the program and introduced senior center director Green, said the check was presented to help senior citizens who attend the center with their daily meals and their meals on wheels program that is coordinated through the center.

“The senior center receives no tax money and operates mainly on donations,” Beck said. “I have visited the center and I was very impressed with all the programs they have for their clients.”
