Bainbridge High School Bearcats head baseball coach Brian McCorkle picks the New York Mets, who opened the World Series against the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, to win the fall classic in six games.

It marked the first Mets World Series appearance in the last 15 years when the squared off against the Royals in the first game of the best of seven fall classic Tuesday night in Kansas City.

“I think the Mets have the starting pitching and hitting advantage over the Royals,” coach McCorkle said Monday. “Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy and third baseman David Wright are both solid power hitters who always seem to come through in the clutch. First baseman Lucas Duda also hits for power.”

Coach McCorkle said that the Mets right fielder and lead off hitter consistently gets on base to start rallies, and plays a solid defensive right field.

“Wright missed much of the early season with a back injury but he really came back strong,” McCorkle said. “While I favor the Mets, I know the Royals have some extra incentive because they lost a seven game heartbreaker to the San Francisco Giants in the 2014 World Series Royals.”

Catcher Salvador Perez, one of the Royals top young players, was on third base when Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval caught a foul pop up to in the game and clinch the 2014 World Series title for the Giants.

With the way last years World Series ended, the Royals certainly have the revenge factor, but McCorkle still favors the Mets because of their strong starting pitching. Their top three starters Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Zack Wheeler, are all dominating hard throwers. Former Atlanta Braves outfielder Kelly Johnson has also contributed to the Mets success since coming over in a mid season trade.

“(Johnson) has had a number of key hits in clutch situations,” McCorkle said.
