Another week, another history-making game.

Bainbridge shut out Griffin for three and a half quarters while posting five touchdowns of its own for a win in the first round of the State Class AAAA playoffs.

The Bearcats dominated the Bears (6-5) 35-7 at a roaring Centennial Field and are 11-0 for the first time in program history.

“We played outstanding,” Bainbridge coach Jeff Littleton said. “We came focused and had a lot of energy to start with. We played hard at all times. These kids have a lot of fight in them. We knew they had some weapons offensively, so I’m proud of our guys for really going after it.”

The Bainbridge defense was the star of the show, collecting five sacks against Griffin quarterback Tylan Morton and holding the Bears to just 155 yards of total offense.

“We had a lot of pressure on the quarterback,” safety Elijah Tyler said. “(Defensive back) Dalvin Spivie and (linebacker) Jordan Martin kept it going and gave the secondary time enough to get passes broken up. Everybody played a heck of a game.”

Quarterback Brett McLaughlin was 10-of-22 for 86 yards, one touchdown pass and an interception.

Running back Dameon Pierce was his normal self on offense, rushing for 128 yards on 17 carries and scoring two touchdowns.

Pierce was first to put the Bearcats on the board with an 8-yard run midway through the first quarter. His second touchdown was a hard-fought drive into the end zone late in the third quarter to make the score 21-0.

Wide receiver Tyler Storey had seven receptions, 69 receiving yards and a touchdown midway through the second quarter. McLaughlin threw a bullet to Storey, who was tightly covered in the end zone, for the 4-yard score.

Pierce appeared to score a third touchdown late in the third quarter, erupting out of the backfield and bulldozing 22 yards to the 1-yard line. He was stuffed before making it to the end zone and the ball popped out. Wide receiver Clark Wiggins recovered it in the end zone to make the score 28-0.

Bainbridge’s final touchdown of the night came when Griffin was lined up to punt on its own 37-yard line. A slow snap gave linebacker Lerone Broadnax time to block the punt, recover it on the 20-yard line and score a touchdown untouched.

Griffin scored in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard run from running back Isaiah Spruill to make the score 35-7. Bainbridge took possession with 4:45 left in the game and ran the clock out by running Malique Pate (50 yards, nine carries).

“It feels great,” Bainbridge coach Jeff Littleton said about the win. “We are going to celebrate the win, but we know we are on a mission to keep playing. We play one day and one week at a time, so we have to make sure we focus on the next opponent.”

Next Friday, Bainbridge will host Sandy Creek (9-2) in the second round of playoffs at Centennial Field. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m.
