The Bainbridge High School boys’ soccer team pulled even late to earn a 1-1 tie against Berrien County last Friday night. The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when a forward knocked in a goal from three yards out after a corner kick.
“I am dissapointed that we gave up the corner for the goal because we work on that every day,” assistant coach Jamie Ard said. “That has been our Achilles heal all year.”
According to Ard four of the eight goal the Bearcats have allowed this season have come off of opponent’s corner kicks.
Freshman forward Angel Martinez proved to be the hero for the Bearcats when he scored in the 74th minute to tie the game.
Martinez was able to record the tying goal after a long throw into Rebel territory. Senior forward Jesus Contreras assisted on the goal when he found Martinez with a quick heal pass. Martinez scored from three yards out.
“I am glad we salvaged a 1-1 tie,” Ard said. “They’ve improved a lot since last time. They are a scrappy team. It was nail-biting.”
The Bearcats returned to the pitch on Thursday when they defeated Westover 8-0 to improve their record in the region to 2-0.
Freshmen Caleb Harris scored his first goal as Bearcats in the game.
According to Ard the final score was deceiving though.
“Even though we came out with an 8-0 win it was probably the sloppiest game for us so far,” Ard said. “We need to make effort to polish and improve our game.”
Ard also pointed out that the win was very important because it kept them undefeated in the region.
The Bearcats are 2-2-1 overall on the season and will travel to Cairo on Tuesday to face the Syrupmakers at 7:30 p.m following the girl’s game.
