An amber alert that was issued for 15-year-old Alexis McKenzie Berry late Tuesday was canceled after she was found safely in Texas. Her stepfather Duane Jaso was arrested and charged with interstate interference with child custody.
Berry was in Texas visiting family with Jaso when a local investigation by Decatur County Sherriff’s Officers determined she might be in danger according to Major Wendell Cofer.
When Jaso refused to return her the amber alter was issued.
According to Cofer, Jaso was later located at motel in Texas and they negotiated his surrender and the release of Berry.
Two DCSO investigators traveled to Texas yesterday where they were assisted in the investigation by Texas Rangers, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, Georgetown City Police, U.S. Marshalls and the FBI.
Berry is currently in the custody of victim service advocates, but Cofer said that he expects that the DCSO investigators will return her to the care of her mother in Bainbridge by the end of the week.
