With the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio drawing near, the International Olympic Committee hosted a series of Olympic Day events throughout the world. Murkenson’s Gymnastics Training Center in Bainbridge was chose as one of the locations to host an Olympic Day event.
Mayor Edward Reynolds signed a proclamation naming Saturday, June 4, 2016 as Olympic Day in Bainbridge and Murkenson’s hosted an event for children to learn about the sport of gymnastics.
Lindy Murkerson said that the 80-plus kids in attendance took part in events including but not limited to tumbling, balance beam, vaulting, uneven parallel bars and cargo net climbing.
“The kids from my gym were supposed to get two kids to come that did not take gymnastics,” Murkerson said. “It introduces kids in the community to what gymnastics is all about.”
She said that the event didn’t only work on gymnastics skills though. Kids had the opportunity to work on their overall muscle fitness.
“Teaching them to be strong, agile, coordinate and having fun at the same time,” Murkerson said.
