TyShawn Galloway and Kendrick Bryant were knocking down jumpers and Skylar Jones gobbled up every stray rebound and banged in the post on their way to victory. The three combined to make up the Warriors and they swept their age group championship at the inaugural Kids ‘n Kops 3-on-3 tournament on Saturday.
“I like shooting buckets,” Galloway said. “Making them and winning.”
The trio earned gold championship rings for the effort and at least one of them knew exactly where he was putting it.
“Keep it in my room,” Bryant said. “It was fun playing against people.”
In the adult championship the Ballers claimed the top spot. The team was made up of Akeem Smith, Paul Chukes and Alvin Perry and John Yarbrough served as the sponsor and coach.
“We think it went good for the first year tournament,” Kenneth Ellison said. “We didn’t have the turnout we thought we would have, but it turned out pretty good. The kids that came out and played they was excited. Especially, the ones that actually won and had the rings. They though that was nice and the parents thought that was nice.”
The events was moved from the outdoors courts at Bill Reynolds Sports Park to the Coliseum at Bainbridge Middle School due to heat concerns. Ellison said that the move may have contributed to the small number of teams, but they are not deterred.
“They were waiting for the next one, but I told them it would be probably later on in the fall,” Ellison said. “We plan on to do two a year so that way we can play outdoors.”
He said that they hope to increase the turnout for the next tournament by focusing more on publicizing the event before hand and getting the word out.
