Despite a strong defensive outing the Bainbridge High School girls varsity soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-0 score to a strong Berrien County Lady Rebels team Last Thursday in Nashville.
The game was scoreless at the half as both teams defended their end of the field with timely takeaways from each other’s attack.
The deadlock was broken in the 43rd minute as a Berrien County forward was able to follow up her deflected shot and quickly redirect another to far post from 8 yards out. The Lady Rebel Forward received a pass in the Bainbridge penalty area and shot from 12 yards away but Lady Bearcat Goal Keeper Tori Sprenkle saved the initial shot but the ball squirted loose and the forward was able to gather it and finish to give Berrien a 1-0.
Berrien County scored their final goal in the 67th minute, as the result of a successful penalty kick. The scoring play was set up as a ball got loose in the Bainbridge penalty area and a Lady Cat defender, trying to clear it out of her end, committed a foul against a Lady Rebel attacker forcing the penalty kick.
“Despite the loss I was proud of how our players competed and hustled on the defensive end throughout the game,” said Ariail
Senior Goal keeper Sprenkle came up with timely stops throughout the game registering 13 saves on the night while surrendering a lone goal.
Along with Sprenkle, Seniors Mallory West, Summer Boyd, Elizabeth Brinson, Aida Diaz, and Ilean Marquez also showed leadership in their determination and hustle on all aspects of the field.
Junior Lacey West and freshman Sandy Baker also played well in defense.
Junior Paige Segall, Freshmen McKenna Segall, Jamya Brinson, along with Marquez and Diaz put pressure on the attack with several near misses.
Junior varsity players called up, who did a commendable job were Kourtney Clark, Jakelyn Zaragoza, Citlaly Morales, Ayline Gabino-Ventura, and Delecia Ford.
Coach Ariail stated “We had played Warner Robins the previous week and lost 10-1 and defensively we had lapses that resulted in the score, so I was incouraged to see our ladies effort against Berrien.”
In the Warner Robins game the lone Bainbridge goal was the result of a well placed Corner Kick by Senior Elizabeth Brinson, who lofted the ball to the center of the penalty area and teamate Ilean Marquez quickly sent a beautiful strike for the score.
The Lady Bearcats are overall 5-8 on the season and will resume play on April 11 traveling to Thomasville to battle Thomas County in a region clash.
