Bainbridge senior Summer Boyd put pen to paper Friday to play soccer at South Georgia State College in Douglas.
“It’s small, and that’s what I wanted,” Boyd said. “It’s a good two-year program. The coach is pretty good, and they just have a good program. It caught my eye.”
Boyd was a four-year starter on varsity. She played in 66 varsity games, scoring 22 goals and registering four assists. She was named to the All Region team last season and this season.
She was primarily a defensive midfielder, but also played attacking midfielder, wing, forward and had four shutouts as goalkeeper.
Coach Chip Ariail said Boyd loves the game, has a strong leg and is a hardnosed defender.
“Summer has always had a passion for soccer,” Ariail said. “She is very aggressive, has good skill work and did a great job for us.”
Boyd said she has been playing soccer since she was little, and couldn’t see herself stopping anytime soon.
“I love it,” She said. “I don’t even play it for awards. I play it because it’s fun.”
South Georgia State College was created by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on Jan. 8, 2013, from the consolidation of Waycross College and South Georgia College in Douglas. The new, multi-campus institution serves approximately 2,650 students from 111 Georgia counties, 22 states and 13 countries.
