A lot of interesting moments happened last Saturday on what was supposed to be a relatively quiet day of college football. It was anything but.

We learned that the SEC is full of parity…

But none of the teams are that good, and they’re all lingering behind Alabama. The Tennessee-Florida game was about as sad of an offensive performance you can ask for. Auburn struggled against Mercer until the Tigers finally broke away late. LSU, supposedly this reconstructed juggernaut in the West, was exposed by Mississippi State. Ole Miss was embarrassed by California and Missouri got strangled by Purdue. Only five teams are undefeated through Week 3—Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt, and Bama-Vandy and Georgia-Miss. State play Saturday, so that number will inevitably get lower. Florida just might lose to Kentucky, also. It will only get weirder from there.

We learned that Texas is still not back…

But USC is as vulnerable as a sitting duck. The 2006 National Championship rematch lived up to the artificial hype, which was surprising. Everyone groaned at the over-dramatic commercials advertising the game, showing Vince Young’s touchdown playing in the L.A. Coliseum over and over. “No way a Texas team that lost to Maryland two weeks ago will compete with the No. 4 team in the country.” Well, shoot… not only did they compete, but they took it to two overtimes and won on a field goal. The Trojans are barely a top 10 team, headlined by a talented quarterback that handles the big stage pretty well. The Coliseum was sold out, and the Trojans still had trouble with a Longhorn team struggling to hold relevance. Clemson, Alabama and Oklahoma would obliterate the Trojans. Speaking of Oklahoma…

We learned that the Sooners and the Cowboys can put up some serious points…

But only one of those teams is the real deal. I need a bigger sample size from Oklahoma State to determine if they’re contenders or pretenders. The Cowboys play an undefeated TCU this weekend, but I’m not positive that will be the real test. On Nov. 4, Oklahoma will come to Stillwater. I expect both teams to be undefeated at that point, and the hoopla of ESPN Game Day surely being in town will make this a very exciting matchup.

We learned that Florida State is the highest ranked 0-1 team in history…

Tallahassee, and Miami too, are still recovering from Hurricane Irma’s fury. The Seminoles haven’t played a game since Sept. 2, a 24-7 loss to Alabama. Even still, they’re hovering around No. 12 in the latest AP poll. Guess the sports writers really, really liked what they saw in that game against the Crimson Tide three weeks ago.

I hope the team and their communities recover quickly, and am looking forward to them playing again soon.

We learned that Memphis is still a silent assassin of the college football world…

And I love it. Memphis shocked UCLA 48-45, and there are some bitter Bruins fans out there. Watch out for those Bengal Tigers!

Only three weeks in, and this season is shaping up to be a wild, constantly changing whirlwind. I hope the chaos continues!
