Betty Sue Powell Mathis, age 72, of Iron City, Ga. and formerly of Eldorendo, passed away Tuesday evening, Sept. 26, 2017, at her childhood home in Iron City.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mathis were held on Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Donalsonville Church of God with Rev. Herman Enfinger officiating.  Interment followed in Corinth Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery with Gary Cunningham, Tracy Horne, Ronnie Lightsey, Rielly Cogland, Jack Newberry, Travis Brogdon, and Cody Barber serving as active casketbearers.

Visitation was held on Thursday evening, Sept. 28, 2017, from 6-8 p.m. at the chapel of Evans-Skipper Funeral Home in Donalsonville.

Mrs. Mathis was born January 29, 1945, to James Grady “Bud” Powell and Vermell Cumerford Powell.  She was a deli worker for many years, as well as a homemaker.  Mrs. Mathis was a member of New Harvest Worship Center.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Lisa Burkett and her husband Scotty of Iron City, and Rob Mathis and his wife Jennifer of Sautee Nacochee, Ga.; her sister, Linda Preston and her husband Dave of Laurel Hill, Fla. and her brother, Edward “Red” Powell of Iron City.

She is also survived by two grandchildren, Jenna Mathis and Matt Burkett.

Mrs. Mathis was preceded in death by her parents, James Grady “Bud” Powell and Vermell Cumerford Powell; as well as her husband, Robert Mathis.
