Since 1976, Decatur County residents and their extended families have attended Christmas caroling at Willis Park on Christmas Eve. Again, tomorrow night, for the 42nd year, we will gather for what is the best small town tradition in America.

The Post-Searchlight has the honor of sponsoring the caroling and I count this as one of the most fulfilling events of the year.

This fantastic event was the brainchild of Sam Griffin, the former owner and publisher of this newspaper, and Dr. Ed Mobley, former president of Bainbridge College. Both of these fine men have passed away, but their fingerprints remain on this event for generations of carolers to enjoy.

For many, attending this event has become tradition, as it has for my family and me. I look forward to seeing each of you tomorrow night. I see and hear from people each year who have attended all the prior performances, quite an accomplishment. I also see and hear from people who have attended for each year of their life.

The Bainbridge Community Band, led by Bainbridge High School Band Director Paschal Ward, will provide the music. There will be upwards of 60 musicians participating with the community band and I think all enjoy themselves. The singing will be provided by 300 or 400 Christmas spirit-filled carolers.

Thanks to the City of Bainbridge for their support of this event. Willis Park is always immaculate and a great setting for a great event.

If you have never attended the event, please accept my invitation to join us in Willis Park at 6:00 on Christmas Eve. I am confident you will enjoy yourself.  And, for those families who attend each year, I look forward to seeing you again.

During this season, please keep those who are away from their families so that we can spend time with ours in your thoughts. Whether it is the local law enforcement personnel who continue to protect us, even on Christmas day, or those in the military stationed stateside or overseas so that we can have the freedom to celebrate Christmas.
