Betty Dias, a graduate of Bainbridge High School has always had a passion for three things: flying, opening a café and fashion.

Dias was already living out her first passion of flying as an airline stewardess for American Airlines, when she decided to open an upscale consignment shop, Betty’s Xchange on the square.

Dias’ love for fashion began when she was living in Greensboro. She would take her 13-year-old daughter to a boutique called Simply Meg’s, where the store associate would help style her.

“I loved watching her,” Dias said. “I could’ve watched her style my daughter all day long.”

These days, Dias is the style guru.

Frequent shopper, Dawn Faircloth said Dias always tries to set her up with something and wear an outfit outside her comfort zone that she normally wouldn’t. Faircloth said she loves the experience, though. She recently brought her sister-in-law and niece into Betty’s Xchange and Dias picked out stuff for all of them.

Although Betty’s Xchange is a consignment store, all clothing items are in excellent condition and of great quality. Most of the clothes are name brand ranging from Steve Madden to Loft. Dias is hoping to bring in more brands soon, including some of her favorites: Joe’s Jeans, Paige Jeans and Hudson Jeans.

When consigners bring in their items for consideration and sale, 60 percent of the profit goes back to the store, while 40 percent of the profit is returned to the consigner.

At Dias’ new location, consigners will have an even bigger opportunity to sell their clothing. The new location has more space and parking. The business had grown exponentially, so there will now be a dedicated space for cocktail dresses and wedding gowns.

Dias believed she had a calling to sell these items after selling three wedding gowns at her previous store.

The new location will also include a tea room/sitting area where husbands, mothers and grandmothers can wait while the rest of the party is shopping. Dias has had many ideas that she is excited to implement in her new building.

Helping Dias with this venture is her best friend, Cindy Bailey. Bailey has long helped Dias in the day-to-day operations of the store and been her biggest supporter since high school.

Along with clothes, shoes and accessories, Dias is still selling her Betty’s Xchange candles from the Refinery. Dias is a wholesaler, so part of the profit from the candle goes to Still Waters women’s shelter. That is one thing Dias will miss about her previous location, whenever she spoke in the square she spoke of the surrounding locations as a team. She would encourage people to shop with her, get a spa treatment at Skincare by Jennifer and dine locally. She always wanted everyone to enjoy their experience and leave with a smile on their face, she said.

Dias’ new location is at 222 Broad Street, where they will have their soft opening on Tuesday.

They are open on Wednesday-Friday from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
