I woke up Wednesday morning and immediately checked the weather app on my phone. The previous afternoon, alerts were sent out that rain, sleet and snow were expected in the Big Bend and South Georgia regions.

I wanted to see what the day looked like. However, instead of any sort of rainy, snowy weather, the forecast called for sun all day long.

I peeked out my window. The app wasn’t lying. It was gorgeous outside.

Darn.

The last time it snowed in Bainbridge was 2010, and even then it was just a light dust sprinkling from the sky. But that’s pretty impressive for our region. I was at least hoping for weather similar to that. There wasn’t a drop of precipitation, frozen or otherwise, anywhere close to us.

Or so I thought.

I saw later Wednesday afternoon that Tallahassee was getting snowed on, big time. For the first time in decades, the Florida capital got a measureable amount. So you’re telling me forty-five minutes south of us its Florida’s version of a winter wonderland and up here in Bainbridge we have nothing.

It gets even worse. Thomasville got snow, too. North of us in Albany, there was enough to stick to the ground. Kids were making snow angels and snowmen. Cars were covered in clean white blankets.

Yet in Bainbridge, we had beautiful sunshine and temperatures in the lower 40s.

From what I gather, a lot of the old timers in these parts will tell you Bainbridge sits in a hole. For some scientific reason, weather seems to skate around our city, hitting all of our neighbors but not touching us. Whether this is true or not, I’m not sure, but the evidence seems to agree.

Take Hurricane Irma for instance. That behemoth was projected to roll right over Decatur County. Instead, it missed us, leaving just enough damage to let us know it could have been much, much worse. In that situation, I’m glad Bainbridge “sits in a hole.”

When the opportunity comes for snow, though, it’s tough to see everyone around us getting a visit from Jack Frost.

Hopefully the next time snow is in the forecast, Bainbridge will get some too. Until then, we’ll enjoy our sunshine, I guess.
