Monday night the Kirbo Center erupted in applause as the first Bainbridge High’s Got Talent came to a close.

The talent show showcased a variety of performances including a singing duet, comedy dance and piano rendition of “Carol of the Bells.” The contestants ranged from freshman to seniors and each brought something special to the table. Judges awarded first, second and third place, while one student received the People’s Choice Award.

Freshman, Connor Willis, and Hannah Bell tied for third place. Bell sang the hit song “When We Were Young” while Willis performed “Carol of the Bells” on the piano. Willis is a self-taught piano player and was surprised at his win. He had become familiar with “Carol of the Bells” and felt comfortable playing it, but didn’t expect to beat out some of the older students. While he was happy with his win, he was more excited at how great everyone else did, he said.

Sophomore, Harley Blocker, placed second for her comedy dance to “Canned Heat.” Blocker said she first saw the dance routine when her class watched the movie, Napoleon Dynamite in history class last year.

“When I saw it, I could totally see myself doing that dance,” she said. “It was a calling.”

Blocker said it didn’t matter if she won or lost, in the end it felt like everyone won. She was glad she had the opportunity to participate and looks forward to making another stage appearance soon. Blocker will play one of the townspeople in the spring musical, Cinderella.

Freshman, Kaitlin Floyd, took home the title of first place with her rendition of “My Everything.” Floyd said she practiced quite a lot for the show, because singing is one of the things she enjoys the most; it is her passion. More than anything, she said she was surprised, but she knew it would be fun either way. She wanted to thank everyone there for supporting her and helping them raise money for the musical, where she will be rehearsing as Cinderella’s understudy.

Finally, Alaiya Schulyer, who sang a “What a Wonderful World” mashup took home the People’s Choice Award.

“I was really, really surprised,” Schulyer said. “I thought my friend, Camry, would win.”

Schulyer said she didn’t even hear her name announced at first. When they brought the medal to her, Schulyer’s mouth dropped open and she was taken aback. Schulyer thinks everyone was incredibly talented, though and hopes it is something they can all participate in again. She wanted to thank the audience, saying there was nothing the BHS drama club could gain without them. Schulyer hopes to show off her vocals again as the fairy godmother in the musical.

Leigh Powell, drama teacher and choral director, was very pleased with the turnout and the amount of money raised and hopes to continue the talent show again next year.
