George H. Herring, Jr., 86, of Bainbridge, Ga., passed away Friday, April 27, 2018, at his home.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Heath Kahlbau officiating. Interment followed at Beulah Thomas Baptist Church Cemetery with Hehle Cole, Tommy Dollar, Dick Youmans, Bud Brown, Ed Patterson and Octavious Perrin serving as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were the Penney-Lambert Sunday School Class, Ed White, Chuck Lewis and Luther Conyers.

George Hamilton Herring, Jr. was born October 6, 1931, in Hartford, Ala., the son of George and Ossie Mae Hodges Herring. He was a graduate of Geneva County High School, Class of 1949 and attended the University of Alabama and Tennessee Technical College. He served during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. George married Charlotte “Shashu” Dodson in 1957. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Penney-Lambert Sunday School Class.
Many will remember George spending his days at the local grocery store or the golf course. He owned Herring’s IGA until his retirement in 1987, and served as the head golf pro at Bainbridge Country Club from 1967 until 1989. He was a member of the American Legion Post 502, and the Elks Club. George served in many capacities in Decatur County helping pave the way to progress. He served as past-president of Bainbridge Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and past-president of the Bainbridge Country Club where he was the only honorary lifetime member. George also served as past chairman of the Airport Authority and the Bainbridge-Decatur County Industrial Development Authority.
Survivors include his daughter, Melissa H. Stewart and her husband, Roger, of Albany, Ga.; his sisters, Gloria H. Conrad of Cordova, Tenn. and Betty H. Morales of Colorado Springs, Colo.; his grandson, Justin Stewart; and his great-grandson, Peyton Stewart. George was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Dodson Herring; his son, Dr. George H. Herring III; and his brother, Don Herring.
