With the Chamber banquet just one night away, there are three men vying for the Kiwanis Man of the Year: Dee Humphrey, Ronnie Burke and Sean Schuyler. All of whom have been nominated by citizens, who see the amount of dedication these men put in to making the community great.

In their letter they highlight how Humphrey is truly a super hero to the folks in need in our community.

“Dee has helped families keep their power on on many occasions, coming out of his own pocket to pay past due bills, so children will have heat in the winter or groceries won’t spoil so they can eat,” it said.

They continued to explain how Humphrey gives of his time, resources and heart to those in need in the community and for this, he deserves to be Kiwanis 2019 Man of the Year

Burke’s letter of recommendation came from three different entities; Family Connection, Darkness to Light and CASA of Southwest Georgia all wrote on his behalf.

In their recommendation they explain that the work that he does goes above and beyond his job description and what makes him the best candidate for the 2019 Man of the Year Award.

“He has built a solid county collaborative by bringing together service providers, non-profits, state and local agencies, school system staff, city and county representatives, and concerned citizens to share information and resources and target chosen projects,” the letter said.

The letter mentioned how Burke has helped with the backpack program, Darkness to Light Childhood Sexual Awareness Prevention, The Literacy Bus, continued support of Adult Education and GED Scholarships, Babies Can’t Wait, SWGA Regional Library programs, Kids and Kops and the Hurricane Recovery Project funded by Community Foundation of South Georgia.

The letter points out that Burke has ensured that Decatur County Family Connection is known and respected by peers and the state Family Connection administration.

He additionally has worked yearly on Secret Santa, the Alzheimer’s Walk, Salvation Army bell-ringing, wrangled a rodeo for a couple years, then a barbeque people’s choice and sits on the board for Samaritan Counseling Center, is a partner with 21st Century grant and The Two Georgia’s Initiative.

The letter ensures Burke will listen to an idea or proposal and if he’s convinced that it will help improve the lives of families and children, he finds a way to make it happen.  He makes being a board member a pleasure because of the obvious success of the organization. He brings confidence, compassion and a strong sense of service to our community.  He is humble and always shares the credit.”

The final recommendation was for Schuyler, who was nominated by Anthony Cooper.

Schuyler works at Danimer Scientific and is reported to always be a key player at work. He is a member of Grace Church, where he is a Deacon and volunteers for various church projects. When he’s not volunteering at church, he is volunteering his time in the community at the Friendship House, Women’s Center and the Shoebox Ministry. In addition to this, he works to make sure everyone is always welcome. He helps people move in and out of town and makes sure he and his family are the first to greet them.

Any of these three men are deserving of the honor. However, only one will be chosen during Thursday’s Chamber Awards at the Kirbo Center.
