The score was 24-17, but Georgia’s win over Florida last Saturday never really felt in doubt.

The Dawgs controlled the game from beginning to end, dominating on the line of scrimmage and coming in clutch on third downs. Jake Fromm was 20-of-30 for 279 yards and two touchdowns, shutting up the critics and having a blast while doing it.

Although, I never really felt like Fromm was the target of the recent barrage the Georgia football program found itself under. Nobody was booing the players; they were booing what the players had to work with. Constant runs up the middle into a stacked box, not taking advantage of the speed Georgia’s playmakers can bring to the outside. Constant longshot passes to receivers down the edge who have struggled instead of working the middle of the field. No real offensive identity.

I can say that there were improvements made in all of those areas against Florida. Georgia’s offensive coordinator James Coley and co-offensive coordinator Sam Pittman introduced a few wrinkles into Georgia’s offense that netted serious yards and resulted in points. Points! It feels good to end drives by scoring, doesn’t it?

Kyle Trask had a good outing as well, going 21-of-33 for 257 yards and two touchdowns, very similar to Fromm. The difference between the two offenses was Georgia got its run game going. The Georgia offensive line had exceptional pass protection all day, and finally started to create some seams for the running backs down the stretch. Not one sack was given up. This was easily that unit’s best game of the season so far.

Georgia remains firmly in the driver’s seat for its third straight visit to the SEC Championship game. At this point, ranking don’t matter for Georgia. If the goal is a trip to the College Football Playoffs, then the Dawgs simply need to win their games. The “gimme game” was used up against South Carolina. If Georgia drops another one, whether it be in the regular season or the SEC Championship, it can kiss the playoffs goodbye.

So long, Willie Taggart. The Florida State Seminoles Booster Club dove in between their couch cushions and scrounged up the $18 million needed to buy out Taggart’s coaching contract, ending what I’m sure will be an era of FSU football never spoken of again. The Noles were pummeled by Miami at home, and the men in charge decided enough was enough. Did Taggart deserve more time? I’d argue he at least deserved three years. I’d also argue he shouldn’t have been hired to begin with. His overall record before coming to Tallahassee certainly raised my eyebrows.

Is it 2011 again? No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama will meet Saturday in Tuscaloosa for some good old fashioned SEC West hard-nosed football. Running that ball hard, stingy defenses, and… Wait… this isn’t 2011? Both teams run spread offenses and average more than 45 points a game, you say? Hmm. Scrap all that, then. I’ll take the Tigers 49-44.
