Sylvia Washington was sworn into office to fill the City Council District 4, Seat 2 by State Court Judge David Kendrick on Tuesday.
Washington is the first African American woman to hold a City Council position in the City of Bainbridge.
“She is a trailblazer,” Councilwoman Glennie Bench said.
Washington affirmed that she would faithfully discharge the duties as a Councilwoman in this city and would defend the Constitution. She then immediately assumed the position that was vacated by Derik McDowell.
Bench is confident in Washington’s abilities and said it is clear Washington has a heart for community service and she looks forward to having her on City Council to better the community.
