Assistant Superintendent April Aldridge has recently created a summer learning newsletter with the hopes of providing educational outlets to students and parents who are worried about the loss of instruction time this past nine weeks.

Aldridge wants to make sure students are ready for their grade level next year. Because of this, she has compiled resources that allow students to review core skills, especially in the area of math and reading. The resources provided are both digital and printable materials, and she will continue to update them throughout the summer.

Aldridge first encourages all students to register for a digital library card through the Southwest Georgia Regional Library. They can do this by logging onto swgrl.org. Once they have their digital library card, Aldridge said to read, read, read. She wants students to read all types of books, ranging from fiction to mystery, while parents visit the DCBOE website and get a link to ask students guided reading questions. This way they can practice critical reading and can summarize what they learned, and can continue to learn about literary elements such as, author, setting and theme.

For students who want science questions, Aldridge has provided a link to a virtual STEM camp. The participation for the camp is free and the activities will be geared towards students in grades K-8 and sponsored by GYSTC. There will be a daily schedule of activities on their website at gystc.org/discover-georgia-stem-camp/.

For students who are missing out on social studies and seeing the world, Grammar Gallery is offering a virtual summer vacation that allows students to explore the wonders of the USA from the home.

Finally, Aldridge encourages kids to watch the broadcast programming being offered by GPB. Students in Pre-K through 12th grade can now access free, education PBS daytime programming designated for each grade level weekdays on GPB-TV.
