Lynwood E. Collins, 89, Whigham, Ga., passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, January 27, 2022. He was born on September 20, 1932, in Whigham, Ga., to the late Charlie C. Collins and Effie Thomas Collins. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and received a Silver Star at the age of 18 for gallantry in action. Shortly after his return from service he married Mary Ann Moore on August 15, 1953; they were married for 68 years.
Lynwood retired from the St. Regis Paper Company in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a member of the Whigham Baptist Church, the Whigham Community Club and the American Legion. Lynwood’s passions included serving the community, annual reunions with the 21st Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, family reunions, fellowship with his friend at Huds, the Wednesday Cookout Group and working in the great outdoors.
Lynwood was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Floyd Collins and sisters, Christine Henderson, Ina Cutchins, Melba O’Hara and Madeline Strickland. Lynwood is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Moore Collins and their two daughters, Susan Baxter and Sandra (Brad) Bradley, grandchildren Laura Bradley, Judson (Brittaney) Bradley and James Baxter, great-grandchildren, Ella, Cooper and Louise; brother, Rodney (Barbara) Collins; sister, Jean Strickland; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
On Lynwood’s behalf, the family would like to thank Kindred Hospice and also Thelma, Jackie, Nita, Rene, Resea and Sherry for their compassionate care. The family would also like to thank Lynwood’s longtime buddy and right hand man, Lorenzo Perkins.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 1, 2022, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Whigham, Ga.; Rev. Kerry Dinkins will officiate.
