The Bearcat Golf Team recently beat Cairo in a home meet at Bainbridge Country Club, and are now headed to Columbus’ Bull Creek Golf Course for the Area Tournament in hopes of qualifying for the State Championship Tournament.
Their final region match against Cairo showcased some of their best players back on the course, after brief absences due to being sick.
Cy Taunton had the lowest shot of the day with a 37, while Will Powell shot a 39.
Carter Skipper shot a 40 and Ray Dodson shot a 43 with a total of 159.
Cairo’s total was 180.
“We won by 21 strokes, which is very good,” Head Coach Rex Wade said.
With this win, the Bearcats will now travel to the Area Tournament, which combines Region 1 with the Columbus Region.
In order to qualify for state, the Bearcats will have to place in the top three at the Area Tournament.
Wade is feeling confident, though.
“We’ve already beat Cairo, and they’ll be there again,” he said. “If we can beat them again, then I think we will have a good shot at going to the State Tournament.”
The Lady Cats will also travel to the Area Tournament after beating Cairo.
Senior Paige Overman shot a 49, along with Anastasia Davis, giving the Lady Cats a victory of 98, compared to Cairo’s 102.
“We won by four strokes there,” Wade said.
Wade’s goal is to have both teams compete in the State Tournament. Last year, the team made it to State, placing 3rd. This year, Wade wants to improve on that by winning the Area Tournament to begin with.
“Our biggest threat will be Columbus High,” he said. “They’re good, but if we play the best golf we can, then I think we definitely stand a chance.”
Following their win over Cairo, the Bearcat and Lady Cats seniors were recognized on Monday night at the Bainbridge Country Club.
