The Lady Cats softball team began their 2022 season on Tuesday night as they took on Colquitt County High School. Despite falling to a 10-5 defeat, the Lady Cats had an exceptional showing and competed at a high level.

Offensively, the Lady Cats were led by sophomore third baseman Kylie Miller who finished the day with three hits and four RBI’s. Her biggest hit came in the bottom of the third as she ripped a bases loaded double into left field to clear the bases and score three runs.

“Kylie’s done a tremendous job at the plate,” said head coach Rex Wade. “She worked her butt off over the summer to do that and that’s why she hits in the three hole. She made the right adjustments and was able to be a spark for us offensively.”

Junior starting pitcher Brenna Conley also had a strong showing and kept the Lady Kats in the game. Conley struck out four hitters and pitched three straight scoreless innings from the second to the fifth. Wade and the Lady Cats look for her to be the ace for the team this season.

“She kept the hitters off balance,” said Wade. “She did an outstanding job both making sure that she hit her spots and throwing different pitches. She mixed in her changeup, rise ball, fastball in different ways to mix up the speed and throw batters off.”

In the end, errors and a strong showing both offensively and defensively by Colquitt County lifted them over the Lady Cats as they walked away with a 10-5 victory. Despite the loss, the Lady Cats were competitive against a top softball program in the state in Colquitt County who is a 7A program.

Coach Wade and the Lady Cats know that if they keep competing and eliminating mistakes, the wins will come.

“I asked the team at the beginning to just compete. That was my only request,” said Wade. “They competed tonight and I’m happy with that. That’s an outstanding ball club in Colquitt County and I think we got some things to work on but the team met my expectations as far as competing.”

The Lady Cats are set to compete in the Watermelon Invitational Tournament this weekend and will play Shaw in their next home game on Sept. 1.
