Members of the BHS Basscats gathered upstairs in the BHS gymnasium last week as one of their own, senior Gage Sellars, signed with Troy University.
Sellars, a lifelong angler, joined the Basscats in sixth grade. He plans to major in biology at Troy. When asked why he chose Troy over other colleges, he said, “I thought that they had the best fishing program as a D1 school.”
“This was not heard of whenever I was in school, having a fishing team,” coach Roy Matthews said. “When we began this, we didn’t realize how it was going to grow, to the point now of it becoming a varsity sport, and that’s just an awesome thing.” He continued, “It’s the support of the family, that network, as well as our community, all the sponsors we have, as well as the support of administration, that they do what’s needed to let you guys fish and do those things. Without that, we wouldn’t be able to celebrate this.”
After the signing, Sellars told the Post-Searchlight, “I just want to thank my friends and family for supporting me.”
