The Bearcat football team hosted two days of padded practice last week. 

 

Four teams traveled to Bainbridge High School for the practices: Colquitt County High School, Pelham High School, Mitchell County High School and Wakullah High School out of Florida.

 

The squads ran gametime simulations against each other. Five minutes on a running clock were allotted to each team to practice specific situations. These situations include third down, open field and red zone scenarios, among others.

 

After each play was called dead, the players regrouped and ran another version of the specific play period. Once the play period was over, another five minutes was put on the clock and the teams switched from playing offense to defense and vice versa. 

 

Players were allowed to make hits, but not at full force. Contact was encouraged and embraced,  with teams “oohing” and “ahhing” after big hits. 

 

Bearcats Head Coach Jeff Littleton said he was pleased with how the team executed the plays on both sides of the ball.

 

“We got a lot of reps in,” Littleton said. “It was really good work.”

 

Littleton said the padded practice allowed his players to practice in-game scenarios and address them in the film room.

 

“We got a lot of work on film that we’ll spend a lot of time evaluating with the kids,” Littleton said.

 

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) sanctions the padded practices. The GHSA allows only four days of padded practice in the offseason. Teams are only allowed to hold two consecutive sessions once per June and July.
