Members of the Bainbridge Rotary Club gathered at the Kirbo Center on Tuesday for their weekly meeting. The guest speaker of the day was Decatur County Schools Superintendent Dr. Boyd English.
With over 30 years of experience in both the Alabama and Georgia school systems, English introduced himself to the audience, recounting his history in education, before moving into discussing three different aspects of the school system: the vision, the facilities, and the people.
Discussing vision, English said, “When you talk about a vision, we’ve centered it on three different components.” These three components include: expanding opportunities for students, fostering a moral nurturing learning environment for students, and offering the best quality instruction possible, in a challenging way.
Moving on to the school facilities, English discussed the progress being made on the new middle school and performing arts building. He stated that the middle school is on track to finish on time, in September of next year.
Discussing the school system’s people, English spoke about the students. He also explained the shortage of teachers experienced during the COVID pandemic, and the increased turnover of principals and superintendents he witnessed. “We’re seeing a new crop of teachers coming in. We’re excited to welcome a new group of around 30 teachers that we’re welcoming into Decatur County schools,” he said.
After concluding his speech, English took questions from the audience.
