Mrs. Lugene Collins Sorrell passed away from this life on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, surrounded by loving family. Lugene was born in Grady County, Ga., on February 13, 1934. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Oscar Aaron and Mavis P. Collins and was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) N. Sorrell; son, Russell Sorrell; and sister, Loretha Johnson.
She and her husband, Bill, shared a very loving marriage of 55 years until his death in 2011. They raised 3 sons, Ken, Gary, and Russell who passed away in 1997.
Lugene graduated from Georgia Baptist School of Nursing in 1955 and worked in various doctors’ offices and hospitals until her retirement. In fact, she and Bill met while she was working at Georgia Baptist. She greatly enjoyed being a part of the nursing profession. Her son, Gary, followed her and became a nurse.
She and Bill were active followers of Jesus Christ and members of many different churches, including Gresham Park Baptist Church, Atlanta, Ga.; Rainbow Park Baptist Church, Decatur, Ga.; First Baptist Church of Stone Mountain, Ga.; Eastside Baptist Church, Cairo, Ga.; Movement Church, Richmond, Va.; and most recently Reformation Church, Ozark, Ala. Lugene had a heart for missions and often led missions study groups in these churches. Her son, Ken and his family, were missionaries for many years and feel her influence and support was a big part of that. She has left a lasting mark on all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by sons, William Kenneth Sorrell and wife, Patti, of Glen Allen, Va., and Gary Allan Sorrell and wife, Gail, of Tallahassee, Fla. She also has grandchildren, Katie Florida and husband, Jesse; Eric Sorrell and wife, Jessica all of Baltimore, MD; step-grandchildren, Krystal Barrett Jenkins and husband, Allen of Cairo, Ga.; Deann Singletary Kirby and husband, Elliott, and Rodney Joe Lewis and companion, Lisa Golding, all of Thomasville, Ga. She also leaves behind great-grandchildren Cadence and Charis Florida and William and Amos Sorrell and step-great-grandchildren Emily and Ava Barrett, Conner Chastain, Bruck Kirby, Faith and Alex Lewis, and Nora Golding.
Also surviving are siblings, Larry Collins and wife, Betty, of Enterprise, Ala.; Sue Thompson and husband, Dewey, of Cairo, Ga.; Mary Rouse of Ozark, AL and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
There will be a visitation at 10:00AM Central Time, Saturday, August 5, followed by a celebration of life at 11:00AM Central Time, at Reformation Church in Ozark, AL. A graveside service will be held at 4:30 PM Eastern Time at Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo, Ga.
In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Lottie Moon International Missions Offering via the International Mission Board in Richmond, Virginia would be greatly appreciated.
