With economic uncertainty rampant, and more recently with disasters like Hurricane Idalia, there are more and more people in need. One local business, PeoplesSouth Bank, recently finished up a food drive, the donations of which will be given to the Salvation Army. This year marked PeoplesSouth Bank’s third year hosting this food drive, dubbed the Tackle Hunger Food Drive, complete with a football season theme.

“PeoplesSouth prides itself on being a community bank,” PeoplesSouth PR and Marketing Officer Jolie Money said in an interview with WTVY. “We also love Alabama, Auburn, any kind of college football, so we wanted to combine our love for our community and football, and do something that would help our community as a whole.”

Alicia Cone, Vice President and Branch Manager of the bank’s Bainbridge branch, spoke with the Post-Searchlight about the fundraiser. “We take up donations, we let them register to win a Walmart gift card, we take non-perishable items, and then we donate them to a food bank,” she said. This year, multiple food trucks were involved in the fundraiser, one parked at each of PeoplesSouth’s 33 locations in the area, with Mi Jefa’s Tacos y Cantina present at the Bainbridge location.

According to Cone, this year saw over 100 non-perishable food items donated. The fundraiser started with the intention of helping the less fortunate, though it is not the only fundraiser the bank does, also taking donations of back-to-school supplies for local schools.

“This year went well,” Cone said. “We will be donating to the Salvation Army for all they do fighting hunger.”
