The Lady Cat softball team starts playoffs this week.
They open against Trinity Christian out of Sharpsburg, GA, on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The Lions are 15-12 on the season and enter the matchup with the Lady Cats on a five-game losing streak.
The Lady Cats enter the game off wins against Thomas County Central and Pelham.
“We’re just going to stay true to what we’ve been doing,” said Lady Cats head coach Rex Wade. “It was good to end the season with TCC and Pelham, so hopefully that carries us into the playoffs on an upward trajectory.”
The Lady Cats are the second-ranked team in their four-team bracket. The first-ranked team is the 22-5 West Lauren Raiders. Third-ranked is Trinity Christian, and the Burke County Bears nestle into the fourth spot.
“We try and focus on ourselves,” Wade said. “We know what we’ve got. We know where we’re at,… The good thing about softball is that you roll the ball out on the field, and it’s anybody’s game.”
Wade said that as the end of the season draws near, his team has to be mentally tough.
“Everybody’s tired, and we’ve got to make sure we can get past that,” Wade said. “We’ve talked a lot about mentally making sure we’re there and making sure we can execute the small things when the pressure’s on.”
The Lady Cats will travel to Dexter, GA, for their portion of bracket play. Games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday in a double-elimination format until one team comes out on top.
Bainbridge’s opening match against Trinity Christian starts at 1 p.m.
“If we pitch well and can put bat on ball and do some things right offensively, I think we’ve got a shot at shocking a few teams,” Wade said.
