The Bearcat Wrestling team opens its season up this weekend with the 15th Annual Swamp Duals wrestling meet hosted by Ware County High School.
Bearcats’ head coach, Paul Coleman, said he’s excited to see what his wrestlers will accomplish this season. 31 athletes make up the team, led by seniors Zachary Burdick and Layton Burris.
The team is top-heavy, figuratively and literally, with most of the wrestlers in the higher-weight classes. Coleman said his better wrestlers are older and have put on mass and muscle as they’ve grown. Though the team skews heavy, Coleman said his younger wrestlers show a lot of potential.
“My sophomore group and my freshman group,” Coleman said. “I give them about this year and next year to get some growth on ‘em, and they should be deadly.”
The Bearcats will travel to Waycross for their season-opening tournament and wrestle against tough competition, according to Coleman. The 10-team tournament is split into two groups. Bainbridge’s group consists of Lowndes High School (7A), Brunswick High School (6A), Berrien High School (2A) and Richmond Hill High School (7A).
“The Swamp is a very tough place to go,” Coleman said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
