As Christmas approaches, local holiday festivities continue to ramp up, with the Yuletide Jubilee scheduled for this Thursday evening, followed by a showing of the film “Elf” this Saturday evening. One holiday display that will go on throughout the holiday season is the city’s Lights Along the River. Situated at the Boat Basin, adjacent to the Tinsel Trail, the light show has added several new displays this year, donated by various groups and businesses in the community.
This will be the eighth year the city has put on the display, which first began in December of 2016. “The idea had been tossed around for a while,” Community Affairs Director Crystal Hines told the Post-Searchlight, “and had floated through different names, ‘Christmas at the River’, but the drive-through, Hatcher Road just kind of lends itself to that.” She added, “We just wanted something that was free and open to the community.”
The lights are on a timer to come on at dusk; drivers can tune their radios to 99.3 for Christmas music to accompany the trip through.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors and commend the dedication of our city workers,” Hines said. “Their tireless efforts in the extensive preparation and maintenance of Lights Along the River have made this festive celebration free and accessible, allowing the community to share in the joy of the holiday season. Thank you for making the magic possible!”
