Historical Society Contributions Made Following Vietnam Traveling Wall Visit

When the Decatur County Historical & Genealogical Society hosted the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall last month, the manager of The Wall extended an offer to the group to place a donation box at the site for those who might be moved to contribute. The only stipulation was that there be clear signage that the contributions were NOT going to The Wall, but to the group (or groups) designated by the host. Management of The Wall stressed that they never collect monies on-site.
Since the costs of The Wall coming here were covered through a generous contribution from The Edward C. Fogg III and Lisbeth A. Fogg Charitable Trust, the DCH&GS opted for the monies to be distributed to four local Veteran organizations and the Bainbridge High School JROTC program. The Historical Society board agreed to supplement the monies raised from the donation box so that each group received $1000 checks. In addition to the JROTC, the four Veteran groups who were presented checks were: American Legion Post 502; American Motorcycle Heroes Association; Operation At Ease; and VFW Post 4904.
After the first of the year, the memorabilia left at The Wall will be buried and an appropriate marker placed at the site. When the date is set and plans are finalized for that, it will be announced so that anyone who wishes to come will be able to do so.
