A reminder: Flag Day is June 14 and Independence Day follows in three weeks.

There are an additional nine flag-flying occasions remaining this year. It’s a good time to replace faded and frayed flags. There are several around Decatur County, including municipal locations, that are noticeably worn and in need of retirement. This is a sad and an embarrassment for our community, which can be easily rectified.

It is considered disrespectful to display ragged flags.

Section 8 of the Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Because many are now made of nylon or other synthetics, burning may be hazardous so it is recommended for citizens to contact the local VFW or American Legion for assistance.

Also, even residential flags that are not brought in from sunset to dawn should be illuminated. Other guidelines can be found by a Web search for flag etiquette.
