The Grace Christian Academy wrestling team competed in the GIAA Region 2 tournament last Thursday. Two wrestlers secured a spot at the state tournament with their performances.
Senior Evan Sigman and junior Preston Barnett are the two state-bound athletes. Sigman finished 3rd at the event, pushing his season record to 18-5 against GIAA competition. Barnett clocked in at fourth, taking the final states spot and making his season record 16-6 versus GIAA opponents.
Freshman Peyton Powell finished 5th at the Thursday meet, putting him just one spot out from State contention. Cougars head coach Michael Sigman said Powell has the chance to be called up as an alternate if a qualifying wrestler drops out.
“I thought [the meet] went great,” Coach Sigman said. “I was really proud of the way the guys did.”
Sigman, Sigman and Barnett will travel to Riverside Preparatory Academy in Gainesville, GA, for the GIAA State Wrestling Meet on Friday & Saturday, February 2-3.
