The Bearcat baseball team opened the 2023-2024 season at home against Thomasville. Bainbridge fell to the Bulldogs 6-8 after a miraculous comeback attempt in the sixth inning. The Bearcats scored six runs in the inning, turning their eight-run deficit to two and making the score 6-8

“I’ll tell you what started it: Nate Cannon,” said Bearcats head coach Donnie Coxwell. “We were taking. We were down by eight runs, we’ve got to take.”

Thomasville opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with two runs, and scored six more through the fifth inning to make the score 8-0. 

The Bearcats answered in the sixth inning. They scored six runs, coming back from the eight-run deficit to make it 6-8. They shut the Bulldogs out in the top of the seventh inning, but were unable to score the three runs they needed to win the game.

“Down by eight, we could have packed it in,” Coxwell said. “We hung around, kept swinging the bat… you never know what will happen.”

The Bearcats ended the night with 9 hits, 6 runs and 3 errors

The Bulldogs ended the night with 7 hits, 8 runs and 4 errors

“We start again tomorrow,” Coxwell said. “Nobodys giving up on anybody.”

The Bearcats travel to Lee County for their next contest — first pitch is at 6 p.m.

Bainbridge has a relatively young team this year. The team lost nine seniors from a season ago and has two seniors this year. Though the team has fewer seniors than last year, it is not without returning starters. 

Juniors Luke Griffin, Nate Cannon, Parker Landrum, as well as sophomore Brooke Hines, are back for another season. Hines earned all-region pitcher honors last season as a freshman. 

“We’ve got a good little nucleus,” Coxwell said. “Now we’ve just got to get better.”
