Walter J. “Walt” Dickson, 74, of Whigham, passed away Friday, February 16, 2024.

The memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Climax Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Rogers and Pastor Steve Poppell officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Walter James Dickson was born March 2, 1949, in Valdosta, GA, the son of Walter & Ruth Trulock Dickson. He graduated from Berrien County High School, Class of 1967, and Valdosta State College in 1971. Walt married Noe Smith in 1971, and they lived in Nashville, GA until moving to Bainbridge in 1983. He worked at Amoco Fabrics & Fibers, sold agriculture equipment, then in 1992, earned his RN from Darton College. Walt worked at Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge for several years and retired from Cairo Hospital. He was a member of Whigham Methodist Church. 

Walt was a simple man who confessed to living life without a plan. His philosophy was to react to life, and though he had a couple of close calls, it worked for him. (He did advise not to follow this plan.) Outdoors was a place of solace Walt often described as “more beautiful than any cathedral”. He enjoyed fishing (especially in saltwater), hunting (which meant every aspect from planting food plots to putting up stands), burning woods, and cutting firewood (which he gave away). His chainsaw was his prized possession and favorite tool in the shed. Helping people, whether personally or professionally, Walt gave it 100%. His calm demeanor and comedic antics turned the tides on many potentially chaotic moments. He loved BIG and enjoyed every moment he spent with you, recalling probably more than you liked at the next event. Walt knew life was a precious gift and said, “We ain’t here for a long time, so make it a good time, and let the good times roll!”

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Noe Dickson; his children, Tru & Kelli Dickson of Bainbridge, Sam Dickson of Whigham, and Jennie Armstrong of St. Louis; his grandchildren, Allee Grace, Brock, Clara, and Conner; and his brother, Robert Trulock Dickson of Lake Oconee. Walt was preceded in death by his parents.
