On a February morning in 2011, 6-year-old Brock Williams sat in front of the television watching his now favorite soccer team, Manchester United. The Red Devils were tied 1-1 with rivals Manchester City, then English soccer legend Wayne Rooney made history. 

The Manchester United forward received a cross in the 18-yard box that sailed slightly behind him. He turned around to face the pass, jumped into the air, and bicycle-kicked the ball into the goal.

“I have this distinct memory,” Williams said. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is crazy… I know which sport I want to play now.”

The iconic shot inspired Williams to pick up soccer, and now, 13 years later, he’s making his own history.

On a February night in 2024, Senior Bainbridge High School midfielder Brock Williams broke Bainbridge’s career scoring record.

“I’ve always wanted it,” Williams said about the record. “It’s a goal I set as a freshman, and I didn’t really know if I could accomplish it… I worked four years for this, and I finally got to it.”

Williams broke the record with the second goal of a hat-trick against Hardaway, bringing his career total to 64. He surpassed the previous mark of 62 goals set by 2014 BHS graduate Luis Mejie. 

Williams entered the season 11 goals away, and he said he knew he made history when the shot went in.

“We’ve kind of been counting it down,” Williams said. “I knew it and was like, ‘I’ve got to hold these emotions in because I have a whole other half to play,’… I had to wait till I got home to really let that emotion hit me.”

William’s father, Garrett Williams, said it was surreal to his son break the record.

“It was something that he set out to do,” Garrett said. “To see him accomplish that was just crazy… Super proud dad moment.”

Bearcats’ head coach Brian Hill said Williams is a great scoring asset to have on the team. Williams netted 31 goals last year, breaking the school record for most goals in a season, and is on pace to score 30 in the regular season alone this year.

“Brock’s an offensive weapon,” Hill said. “He’s got a really big leg, and he can swing with both his right and left. He’s a threat.”

After the final whistle, Williams was given the game ball that scored the record-breaking goal. The team then walked to the stands to thank the fans, and senior defensive back Tomas Gallo hoisted Williams onto his shoulders as the rest of the players gathered around him to celebrate.

“A lot of the Hispanic and Latino guys have this nickname for me,” Williams said “They call me ‘Guerro,’ which, in Spanish, just means ‘white boy.’ So they put me up on their shoulders and started chanting ‘Guerro! Guerro! Guerro!’ That made me feel special.”
