The Grace Christian Academy varsity golf teams are your GIAA Region 3-2A Champions. The Cougars and Lady Cougars secured their region titles at the region championship golf match on Monday, April 15.
The Cougar team, made up of Noah Henderson, Henry Lee, Trey Henderson and Matthew Ryan, shot a 348 to secure the title, 15 strokes lower than the second-place team.
“We had beaten everyone else in the region,” Cougars’ head coach Jeff Toole said. “I felt like we had an opportunity [to win]… They played solid golf, they’re all contributing.”
Noah Henderson shot a 78, one stroke away from the lowest score of the day. He and Lee (85) were awarded All-Region honors for their performances. Henderson is a freshman, and Lee is an 8th grader, and Toole said he’s fortunate to be able to coach two young talents.
“Sometimes I land at the right spot at the right time,” Toole said.
The Region win cemented the Cougars’ spot in the GIAA State Playoff match, slated for Monday, April 22nd, at the Harbor Club Golf Course in Greensboro, GA.
The Lady Cougar team, made up of Izzy Rentz, Reagan DeLanoy and Kate Sigman, shot a 204 in the win, 15 strokes lower than the next finisher.
Rentz led the team with a 101, followed by DeLanoy’s 103 and Sigman’s 105. All three golfers earned All-Region honors with their performances at the match.
DeLanoy and Sigman both played their best rounds of golf, according to Toole. He said he almost kept Sigman out of the match due to a nagging foot injury, but she insisted on playing it out.
“I wasn’t sure she was going to make it,” Toole said. She said, ‘I’m going to make it, Mr. Toole.’ She walked six miles, never complained, and played her best golf. I’m very proud of her.”
