The Bainbridge City Council met for their April meeting last Tuesday evening. Following the invocation and pledge, the Council voted to approve the previous meeting minutes.

After this, they considered an agreement with the Humane Society, which is preparing to move to its new shelter. Alongside this move, the city and Humane Society will enter into an agreement governing how the two operate going forward. One part of this agreement stipulates that current employees of the Humane Society would be given the opportunity to become city employees, though they would have to go through the ordinary city hiring process. Either party is allowed to terminate the agreement, with conditions to make the other party whole. The agreement was approved.

Next on the agenda, the city heard an introduction of demolition ordinances, specifically for properties at 811 Church Street, 306 Miller Avenue, 705 Bruton Street, and 413 Lamar Street. As this was just an introduction, the council will hold a public hearing and consider formal adoption at next month’s meeting.

The council next heard the introduction of an amendment to the city’s alcohol ordinance. According to city manager Chris Hobby, the amendment codifies the downtown open-container rules already being enforced, that being the closing hour for the downtown open-container district being 11:00 PM.

“That’s what we’ve already been telling folks,” Hobby said, “it’s just that language is not in the ordinance. So we’re just kind of making sure that we’ve got everything the same, so we’re telling folks right.” Hobby also added that this would help with downtown public drunkenness. The council will decide on this amendment at their next meeting.

Following this, the commissioners heard a resolution that would designate April 21- April 27 as Georgia Cities Week in Bainbridge. The council approved the resolution.

Next, the council considered the reappointment of Dr. Linda Lumpkin to the library board, which they approved.

The next item on the agenda was the renewal of the city’s property and liability insurance with GIRMA for $435,254, which the city approved.

The council also heard a bid for lead and copper meter inventory, from Gaines Utility Construction Company, LLC, for $247,500, which they also approved.
