Oscar Ervin Nelson was born January 28, 1931, in Kokomo, IN, the son of Oscar & Leota Brock Nelson. After high school graduation, Bud apprenticed in a machine shop for several years. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army. Bud married Irene Cannon in 1952; they spent their lives in Indiana, Jasper, TN, and retired to Irene’s stomping grounds in Decatur County in 1994. He was a Mason and a Shriner, a member of the Penney-Lambert Sunday School Class, and a member of First Baptist Church.

The outdoors and his shop were two of Bud’s favorite places. He enjoyed most any outdoor activity but spent hours working in his yard tending the flowers. Bud’s shop was filled with memories and remnants of projects made with love. The details of his woodworking projects and the beauty of his stained glass radiated a heartfelt dedication to the recipient and desire for them to know just how special they were to him.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Irene Cannon Nelson; his son, Donald E. Nelson and his wife, Penny, of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Chaplain Lt. Donald R. Nelson, US Navy, and Amanda Foster; and his great-grandchildren, Drew Mullinax and Abbey Mullinax. In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his siblings, Earl Nelson, Tom Nelson, Rick Nelson, Betty Greer, and Norma Jean Mooney.
