While southeast Georgia is expected to receive the brunt of Hurricane Debby, and at least four dead have been reported in Florida, Bainbridge and Decatur County have been left largely unaffected by the storm.
While school was cancelled, ultimately Debby veered to the east after making landfall Monday morning. While winds were severe, there was little in the way of rain, and not much in the way of damages or disruptions to daily life.
According to Fred Rudbeck, Georgia Power’s Bainbridge Area Manager, Bainbridge “faired pretty well”, with only spotty outages; in the meantime, the Valdosta region has roughly 12,000 customers left without power.
In terms of damages and situations requiring law enforcement and emergency services, both Bainbridge Public Safety and the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office had similar reports. BPS Chief Redell Walton described the day as “anti-climactic”, only having a few branches and a downed tree to worry about. Likewise, Sheriff Wiley Griffin reported only three downed trees as the worst the sheriff’s office had to deal with.
