Thursday evening, the Firehouse Art Center held an art exhibition on the final day of its Cultures Around the World art camp. The kid’s artworks were exhibited for families and friends to view. During the six weeks of art camp, students have designed pieces in Aboriginal Australian dot art, Mexico’s Alebrijes sculptures and Amate Bark paintings, China’s Blue Vase pottery, and Russian Stacking Dolls.

Claire Webb, the Art Teacher, explained the progress and reasoning behind the artwork’s creation. For instance, she stated students created Indigenous Australian Dot Art using Australian animals as their main piece. The backstory of the creation is that the art was originally done on cave walls or in sand, but in the 1900s, an artist encouraged aborigines to place dot art on canvas so their stories could live longer and their messages can only be known to other aborigines. Students learned historical facts and imitated art.

Webb is saddened by the art camp coming to an end, but she is proud of the students and their artwork, saying, “I’m proud of the students and their artwork that they created, but I’m sad that it’s coming to an end because it was shorter than normal, but excited for their parents to come and see what they’ve done, and their growth.”

She continued, “It’s great to see where they’ve progressed.”

The Firehouse Center will start another program for 5th-8th graders in the Spring. So, be on the lookout for more information.
