Fourth and fifth grade students from Hutto Elementary School are gearing up for an exciting three-day trip titled “Footsteps to Freedom,” scheduled for January 15th to January 17th. This journey will take them to Montgomery, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia. The trip is organized by Preston Poitevint of Georgia Studies Tours.
This trip has been made possible in part through a generous grant from First Port City Bank, through the Decatur County Schools’ Foundation. Both students and staff are immensely grateful to the Decatur County Schools’ Foundation for their support in providing our students with this incredible opportunity! Furthermore, students also played a vital role in funding this meaningful experience by participating in a Krispy Kreme fundraiser and a “Pick-A-Date & Donate Calendar” fundraiser.
During their visit to Montgomery, students will tour the Rosa Parks Museum, where they will learn about the bravery and determination of individuals who fought for justice during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. They will also visit the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church gaining insights into the historical events that shaped our nation.
Following their time in Montgomery, students will travel to Atlanta. Here, they will tour the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, which includes The King Center. Additionally, they will enjoy a visit to the famous Georgia Aquarium, where they can discover marine life and learn about ocean conservation.
On the final day of their trip, students will explore the Sweet Auburn Historic District, visiting the Apex Museum and the SCLC Headquarters for a hands-on history experience. The adventure will conclude with a trip to Zoo Atlanta, providing students with an exciting opportunity to learn about animals.
After returning, students will write about their experiences or create projects that relate to their science and social studies standards. This educational and inspiring trip will deepen students’ understanding of American history while creating lifelong memories.
