A roaring fire completely destroyed a Bainbridge house which had been vacant since a previous fire last July.

At approximately 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night, Bainbridge Public Safety responded to a report of flames at an old wooden home located at 808 Sharpe Street, near its intersection with S. Scott Street in central Bainbridge. Not long after officers arrived, they observed the blaze quickly growing out of control. As a result, BPS Assistant Fire Chief Marty Brown asked E-911 dispatchers to request mutual aid from Decatur County Fire and Rescue and volunteer firefighters.

Fire and Rescue and volunteer departments from Climax and Blackjack did respond to the scene to provide extra manpower in fighting the towering flames, which completely engulfed the home and set multiple trees on fire. State troopers from the Georgia State Patrol’s Colquitt Post and Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies also responded to provide traffic and crowd control.

The fire was essentially contained shortly before 11 p.m., although firefighters were still actively putting out smaller flames at that time.

It was not immediately known what started Tuesday night’s fire, although no one was reported to have been living at the home.

Wednesday morning BPS firefighters returned to the home to put out areas of the home that had begun to rekindle and were smoking.

Assistant Fire Chief Gary Welch said the intense heat from the fire caused damage to the siding one of the next door homes.

No one was injured battling the blaze.
