Vera Mathews’ first-grade classroom at Lillian E. Williams Elementary School enjoyed a week-long celebration of Dr. Seuss and his magical rhyming books.

They read “The Cat in the Hat” on Monday and on Tuesday, they made their very own cats in hats. They read “The Cat in the Hat Comes Back” on Wednesday and there was a lively discussion of what was alike and what was different about the two stories. Hannah Gibson and her mother, Erica, brought the class a Dr. Seuss birthday cake and punch to enjoy at recess.

Thursday was “Foot Book” day.

The students made a shoe graph that showed that most people in the class wore sneakers that day. Partners traced each other’s feet and then each student cut their feet shape out. They loved the activity and discovered that there were many different shapes and sizes of feet in the classroom.

The class also enjoyed a Scholastic News that showed pictures of Dr. Seuss when he was a young boy. They learned that he had a sister and that he loved drawing cats.

The first activity for Friday morning was the reading of “Green Eggs and Ham.” Mathews and her class then prepared green eggs and ham by following the steps in a recipe. The students tasted the eggs and ham and washed it down with a cold glass of milk. They graphed how many students liked and did not like the green eggs and ham. The graph showed that everyone voted that they liked the yummy breakfast treat. They also made a list of words that rhyme with green and words that start with gr. They ended the day reading “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.”

Some of the students said that Dr. Seuss books are the best!
