Thanks to a call from OnStar, Decatur County Sheriff’s Deputies recovered a stolen car Tuesday morning on U.S. 27 South in Bainbridge.

OnStar, an in-vehicle auto safety and security system, contacted the E-911 informing them of a stolen vehicle out of Tallahassee, Fla., was heading into Decatur County on U.S. 27 South. Sheriff’s deputies, along with Bainbridge Public Safety officers, were on the lookout for the stolen truck, said Capt. Liz Croley.

Sgt. Maurice Gaines, West Bainbridge Middle School resource officers, spotted the truck first and relayed its location to E-911.

Deputy Jason Williams and Investigator Redell Walton stopped the vehicle, pulling it over off of U.S. 27 South at Toole Dairy Road.

The driver, 32-year-old Thurman Franklin Nerren, told police he was homeless, was arrested and charged with theft by taking a stolen vehicle across state lines.

K9 helps catch suspect

Early Sunday morning a Decatur County Sheriff’s Office tracking dog helped catch a man running from law enforcement.

At around 1 a.m., Decatur County Sheriff’s Cpl. Michael Logue attempted to stop a vehicle for having a tail light out after it pulled onto Shotwell Street from the U.S. 27 bypass.

The white Cadillac didn’t stop, heading east on Shotwell Street. The driver then turned south onto Bruton Street and began speeding up and driving on the wrong side of the road, according to incident reports. The Cadillac turned onto College Street swerving off the road. At the end of College Street, the vehicle pulled into a brickyard and attempted to drive up a steep hill. At the top of the hill the driver, Anthony Tyrone Chandler, got out and took off on foot.

Logue yelled at the man to stop and when he continued to run, Logue released his dog, Koti, to give chase. The K9 caught up to Chandler grabbing hold of his right leg. Logue regained control of the dog and detained the driver until other officers arrived.

Chandler, 32, of 1303 Talmadge Drive, Bainbridge, was arrested and charged with probation violation, fleeing or attempting to elude, tail lights required, driving while license suspended or revoked and reckless driving.

Juvenile aggravated assault

A female juvenile was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a knife after an argument with her boyfriend became physically on Saturday.

According to incident reports, on Nov. 22, Bainbridge Public Safety officer Demetric Stubbs responded to the Memorial Hospital and Manor Emergency Room in reference to an assault.

The 19-year-old male victim said he and his 15-year-old girlfriend had an argument. He told the officer during the argument, his girlfriend went inside her home and got a kitchen knife. After he verbally provoked her using profanity, she tried to stab him in the leg. The knife did not penetrate his pants. The male said he then pushed her away and ran to a nearby parking lot where she chased him and stabbed him in the left shoulder with the knife.

The male then went to the emergency room to receive treatment for the wound.

The juvenile was picked up at her home and arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Boat Basin vandalism

On Nov. 21, city workers discovered water flooding out of the restrooms at the Boat Basin beach area. The water connections to the sinks and toilets had been broken off. The vandalism caused damage estimated to cost $50 to repair.
