Lois Epperson

Funeral services for Lois Douthit Epperson, 86, of Tallahassee, Fla., will be Sunday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m. in the chapel at Ivey Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Greenshade Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, Feb. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ivey Funeral Home.

Born on Sept. 2, 1922, in Pearson, Ga., Mrs. Epperson unexpectedly died on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee, Fla.

She grew up near Miami, Fla., but her family later moved to a farm near Fowlstown. Mrs. Epperson graduated from Attapulgus High School and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Ga. While living and working in Bainbridge, in 1945, she met and married John L. Epperson, Jr., a Texas boy who was in the U.S. Army and stationed at the Bainbridge Army Air Base. After Mr. Epperson’s return from his overseas deployment to Japan, they moved to Tallahassee in 1946 to raise a family. Throughout her life in Tallahassee, Mrs. Epperson was a member of the Tallahassee Garden Club, The Woman’s Club, Rebel’s Club and the Capital City Country Club. She was an avid gardener, an accomplished seamstress, a full-time homemaker and loved to entertain in her home and travel whenever possible. She also worked in both houses of the Florida Legislature. She was a natural beauty and modeled hair and clothing for Alice Melton, the owner of Alice’s Beauty Salon, and was always active in all phases of the Tallahassee social community. Mrs. Epperson was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Epperson Jr., and her younger brother, C.T. Douthit Jr., of Albany, Ga.

Survivors include three sons, Les Epperson of Tallahassee, Ronnie Epperson and Kirk Epperson, both of Havana, Fla.; her sister, Mary Ellen Forester of Cairo, Ga.; one granddaughter and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
