There are certain events that sports writers have the privilege of covering in their careers that they will remember and cherish as long as they live.

Three of those cherished memories stick out in my career.

The first was covering Decatur County School Superintendent Ralph Jones’ Bainbridge Bearcat football team’s march to the 1982 State Class AAA championship.

The second came in 1986 when I covered Coach Stan Killough’s Bearcats baseball team’s defeat of the Thomas County Central High School Yellow Jackets behind a brilliant no-hit pitching performance by senior right-hander Trent Hatton at the old Bearcat Field.

The third came this past Friday night when I covered Coach Scott Miller’s Bearcats baseball team’s 6-1 Region 1AAAA defeat of the Westside Macon High School Seminoles behind a brilliant no-hit pitching performance by senior right-hander Peyton Willis at the new BHS field.

Willis, a fine young man with a strong array of pitches, kept the Seminole batters off balance all night. His fast ball, curve ball and off-speed pitches were working to perfection.
